3.5 Sacred Places in Canon Law

Sacred places are governed by canon law. One cannot simply alter, refurbish or make changes in a chapel, for instance, without proper procedure laid down in canon law. On the other hand, sacred spaces might not necessarily be bound by canon law, thus, there is a difference between sacred places and sacred spaces.

The ECSI (Enhancing Catholic School Identity) Team within KU Leuven identifies five different types of sacred spaces that can be found in Catholic schools and proposes the ideal model (Model 6) in the Masterclass of Sacred spaces in the Catholic School. Six Models through an ECSI Lens, presented by Prof. Dr. Didier Pollefeyt and Drs. Jans Bouwens, and facilitated by Dr. Michael Richards.

Below is a presentation on sacred places in canon law with particular attention to those sacred places found in Catholic schools (i.e. usually oratories/chapels and altars). A comparison with ECSI’s Model 6 is also made.
